Warning: date() [function.date]: It is not safe to rely on the system's timezone settings. You are *required* to use the date.timezone setting or the date_default_timezone_set() function. In case you used any of those methods and you are still getting this warning, you most likely misspelled the timezone identifier. We selected 'America/Chicago' for 'CDT/-5.0/DST' instead in /backup/qa/www/sub/rss/product.php on line 32

As a recent MAME user, I am not qualified to give an in-depth comparitive review, as I am not sure what else may be out there. But from my perspective such as it is, this is a really cool application. I was using MAME command line app before this, and ExtraMAME has made it a lot more fun for me. The list of working ROMS has improved my gaming experience, because I don't have to test a whole bunch of broken ones just to fine one that works. The easy launch of games, the preview screen so that I can judge by a screenshot whether it's my kind of game, the extensive configuration, and the ability to escape from a frozen game without having to restart MAME: these are a few of the reasons that I am glad that I found ExtraMAME. And it's very stable. I haven't had a single crash, even when testing unsupported games.
I recommend ExtraMAME to any new MAME user, and even to experienced users too.
